Originating in the early eighties in Kingston Jamaica, dancehall music emerged from a reaction to the dominance of traditional reggae. Initially, it was marked by deejays toasting on top of instrumental tracks, soon evolving into a signature combination of synthesized sounds, rhythmic beats, and frequently raw lyrics.
